Cutaway model of a present day three-phase induction motor. In contrast to the synchronous motor, whose rotor turns in exact synchronism with the cycles of the AC line current, the induction motor must turn slightly slower than the rotating field generated by the AC current in the stator, to develop torque. Applications where the drive will be speed-dependent torque not particularly interfere, such as in pumps or fans.
