Sinking of Ss Athenia, September 1939
Three women follow a soldier down the gangway of the Norwegian vessel KNUTE NELSON as he carries a toddler ashore at Galway harbour, Ireland on 6 September 1939. The civilians had been rescued from the passenger liner SS ATHENIA which was torpedoed by U-30 on the evening of 3 September 1939 off the north west coast of Ireland and sank the following morning.
